These are still frames pulled from an animation series I created to explain how structural violence, a term used in Peace and Conflict Studies and developed by Johan Galtung, is reinforced by cultural violence.
In these stills, we see how words, statements and actions by organizations reinforce and legitimize social injustice and the suffering of the Summit-Cone families. I use a game metaphor to introduce the complexity of a system and to show how a “rigged” game or “unlevel” playing field increases the chances of families coming to harm or death.
The events of Summit-Cone in which 5 children died were part of a talk I gave. The below images are an elaboration of ideas that grew from that talk.
